Plastic injection molding

From packaging to consumer products and everything in between, plastics are an integral part of modern manufacturing. The majority of these items are created using a method known as plastic injection molding.

This process involves injecting molten plastic into a carefully designed mold. But how does it work, and what should you be mindful of when exploring injection molding?

Step 1: Designing a 3D model

Every injection molding project begins with a detailed 3D model. This digital representation brings your concept to life, serving as a foundation for the final product. Drawing on extensive experience, we refine and adjust the design to ensure it is optimized for the molding process as well as the product’s intended application. This fine-tuning is carried out in-house, in collaboration with industry specialists, to guarantee the best possible outcome.

Step 2: Developing the injection mold

Once the product design is finalized, the next step is creating the injection mold. This mold, also called a tool or die, is custom-built to suit your specific product requirements. Depending on budget and quality preferences, molds can be manufactured locally or overseas. During an initial consultation, we’ll discuss these options in detail to find the ideal solution for your project.

Molds are highly complex, consisting of multiple parts that must fit together perfectly. Investing in a high-quality mold design offers numerous benefits, including improved production efficiency and minimized wear on components, which can save time and money in the long run.

Although the mold itself represents the largest upfront investment, it is designed for longevity and can last for years with proper care.

Step 3: The injection molding workflow

The production phase is where your vision takes shape. Injection molding involves several key steps:

  1. Melting the plastic
    Plastic granules are fed into a heated barrel inside the injection molding machine. As the screw within the barrel rotates, frictional heat combines with external heating bands to melt the plastic gradually.

  2. Measuring and injecting
    The molten plastic is carefully measured to ensure the exact quantity needed for your product. This measured amount is then injected under high pressure into the mold, filling the cavity completely.

  3. Cooling and shrinkage compensation
    As the plastic cools inside the mold, it solidifies and naturally shrinks. To prevent gaps or defects, additional material is applied during this stage to ensure the plastic maintains contact with the mold walls.

  4. Removing the finished product
    Once the plastic has hardened, the finished product is ejected from the mold. It is either placed on a conveyor belt or removed using robotic arms, ready for packaging and delivery.
